| PAINTING LIKE THE PROS: |
EXTERIOR:
Paint in the shade if possible, not in direct sunlight which can make the surface quite hot. You can add up to ten percent of appropriate thinner to your paint in really hot weather for longer working time and a nicer finish.
First things first
Paint large surfaces first. Begin with the siding, then windows, trim and doors. Try and remove storms, screens and shutters. It’s often easier to paint them on the ground. Begin at the top of the house and work down.
Brushing
Just like painting the interior, never dip bristles all the way into the paint, and tap off excess on inside of can. When working from a ladder, never bring a full can of paint. Begin painting under edges of horizontal clapboard and the side edges of vertical clapboard first. Then brush paint out well. "Feather"” the ends of your brush strokes to eliminate lap marks where one painted area meets another.
Side to side
Paint in sections across horizontal face of the house. Your reach will determine section width. Paint from the top down in each section.
Windows, doors and trim
These are treated the same as for interiors. Only the paint is different. For metal surfaces, use spray paint if very intricate work (see section on Preparing, under Heavy metal). If you haven’t completed painting by nightfall, clean and store tools as recommended in the following section under Cleaning Up. |
